Short History

Our founder, Dana Anjali, formed a sitting group in Regina with like-minded friends in 1993.  Her teacher, Sharda Rogell, who has been associated with Gaia House in England and Spirit Rock in the US, was RIMC’s guiding teacher until her retirement in 2024. In addition, Howie Cohn, also associated with Spirit Rock, has been an important influence in our community’s development.   Since that time, members of Regina Insight Meditation Community have shared a commitment to explore and practise the Buddha’s teachings together, primarily through the Vipasanna (Insight) tradition.  Realizing that everything is and always has been interdependent and that our happiness and well-being are directly related to the happiness and well-being of others, we practice the cultivation of awareness, presence and awakening to enable us to live with more clarity, wisdom, compassion, and love for our own benefit, for the benefit of each other, and for the benefit of all living beings.

From its beginning, our community (sangha, in Pali) has freely offered and shared the precious teachings of the Buddha and welcomed anyone who wishes to practise with us, hoping to be a sanctuary for all of us through mutual agreement to respect and honour each person’s direct, diverse and unique experience. In these turbulent times, we are challenged to discover on ever-deepening levels what it means to be truly human, where wisdom and compassion, rather than ignorance, determines our choices.
